DSC TOURNAMENT SET TO BEGIN ON FRIDAY
Wingate, N.C.----The pairings are set for the 2009 Deep South Conference men’s lacrosse tournament, league officials announced today. The two-day event will be held Friday and Sunday at Irwin Belk Stadium and John R. Martin Field on the Wingate campus. The semi-final games will be held at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. Friday. The 2009 DSC championship game is slated for 2 p.m. Sunday.
Defending DSC tournament champion Mars Hill College is the number one seed. The regular season champion Lions are 10-3 overall and 5-0 in the DSC. The number seven team in the USILA top 10 poll, Mars Hill will face number four seed Catawba (3-7 overall, 2-3 DSC) in the first of two Friday semi-final contests. The MHC Lions and the Catawba Indians will battle at 1 p.m. Friday. In 2008, Mars Hill won its first-ever DSC tournament title with a 9-7 championship game victory over Saint Leo (Fla.) University.
Saint Leo is the number two seed in this year’s DSC event. The SLU Lions (9-3 overall, 4-1 DSC) will battle host Wingate University (8-7 overall, 3-2 DSC) at 4 p.m. Friday. Interestingly enough, the Lions eliminated 2008 regular season champion Wingate 8-7 (in double overtime) in a semi-final contest last year. Current junior midfield Kyle Marceau (Concord, N.H.) scored the winning goal for the SLU Lions.
During the 2009 regular season, Mars Hill picked a 17-6 road victory over Catawba on March 7. MHC Lion senior attack David Hodgins (Windsor, Ontario) had five goals to lead the visitors. Saint Leo topped visiting Wingate 16-11 on March 3, thanks to five goals by Marceau.
