Florida Southern tops Rollins 7-4 in DSC Tourney

Lakeland, Fla.----
Just three days after setting one milestone by defeating a nationally-ranked team, Florida Southern's lacrosse team set another one by defeating Rollins 7-4 for its first Deep South Conference Tournament victory Tuesday night at Bryant Stadium.  The Moccasins improve to 4-8 overall, while Rollins finished their season 3-9.

Rollins struck first three minutes into the first quarter when Justin Wright scored, giving the Tars a 1-0 advantage.  The Mocs’ Cam Holding took advantage of a man-up situation to even the game 1-1 with 5:50 left in the first quarter.   Rollins won the ensuing faceoff as Andrew Vossler found Austin Ricci for his first of two goals in the game to give the Tars a 2-1 advantage with 5:42 remaining in the first quarter.

The Moccasins offense responded with three straight goals to start the second quarter.  Corey Brown started the run, scoring his lone goal of the game off a Jon Freda assist at the 12:41 mark.  Holding scored twice to give Florida Southern a 4-2 lead with 10:00 minutes left in the first half.  The Tars where able to cut the deficit to 4-3 before halftime on a Charlie Shelly goal.

Ricci scored what would be the Tars’ final goal with 13:02 remaining in the third quarter to even the score 4-4.  Adam Ismaeil scored his first goal of the season to put the Mocs ahead 5-4 with 11:03.  That goal would turn out to be the game-winning goal.

Andrew Almansberger didn’t allow a fourth quarter goal for the second straight game and finished the game with 15 saves.  Chase Juelich had four ground balls and caused two turnovers.

Erdman Named Inside Lacrosse/Nike National Player of the Week

Saint Leo, Fla.----Saint Leo University junior goalie David Erdman has been selected as this week’s Inside Lacrosse/Nike National Player of the Week it was announced by InsideLacrosse.com on Tuesday morning.  The Mt. Sinai, NY native stopped 27 shots on the week and his brilliant performance last Saturday helped lead the Lions to a 12-11 upset of then-No. 4 Merrimack.

Erdman racked up 27 saves in those victories, including 19 in the win over Merrimack. He collected eight saves while allowing only five goals against Notre Dame De Namur earlier in the week. Erdman’s effort against number four Merrimack included a point-blank stuff of an MC player who snuck behind the SLU defense, caught the ball in stride, and headed, uncontested, towards the goal.  The save set the tone in the crease and preserved the Saint Leo victory.

The 6’4” Erdman has helped the ninth-ranked Lions to a 7-1 start, with a double-overtime loss to Queens University of Charlotte standing as their only blemish in 2010. On the season, Erdman has stopped 61 percent of the shots he's seen while only allowing 6.65 goals per game.

His selection marks the first National Player of the Week in the five-year history of Saint Leo Lacrosse and it is the second individual honor on the national scale for the Lions in 2009-10 after volleyball junior Bruna Rocha claimed AVCA national honors on October 8, 2009.
