Saint Leo, Catawba and Mars Hill claim weekly DSC honors

Wingate, N.C.----Saint Leo senior attack Benjamin Brigham (Scituate, Mass.) is this week’s Deep South Conference Offensive Player of the Week. Catawba College sophomore goalie Colin McClimans (Washington D.C.) is the Defensive Player of the Week while Mars Hill’s Chris Cudmore (Whitby, Ontario) is the Freshman of the Week, league officials announced Monday.

Brigham scored six goals in Saint Leo’s 16-3 win over Rollins College. He scored the six goals on six shots, helping the Lions claim the number two seed in this week’s Deep South Conference Tournament. Brigham also collected four ground balls on the afternoon.

McClimans posted a .660 save percentage on the week, as Catawba posted a 1-1 record and secured a spot in the league tournament. McClimans posted a .704 save percentage and stopped 19 shots in a tough 8-7 overtime loss to Wingate. He followed that up by recording a dozen saves in a 10-8 win over Florida Southern. McClimans had four saves in the final quarter as the Catawba Indians rallied from an 8-7 deficit, scoring the last three goals over the final 12:30. 

Cudmore had two caused turnovers, one ground ball and held his man to zero points in Mars Hill’s 12-5 win over Pfeiffer, as he claims Freshman of the Week honors for the fourth time this year. He had five ground balls and four caused turnovers against Queens, while holding the Royals second leading scorer to zero points.

Mars Hill sweeps DSC POW honors


Wingate, N.C.----Mars Hill junior attack Danny Farmer (Calgary, Alberta) is this week’s Deep South Conference Offensive Player of the Week. MHC junior midfielder Brent Hann (Fallston, Md.) is the Defensive Player of the Week while Chris Cudmore (Whitby, Ontario) is the Freshman of the Week, league officials announced Monday.

Farmer led MHC to an 11-4 win at Wingate to clinch sole possession of the DSC regular season title.  He scored five goals and added three assists in the road victory. Farmer also collected three ground balls on the afternoon, as he wins Player of the Week honors for the third time this season.

Hann helped anchor the Mars Hill defense in the victory at Wingate. He won 15-of-18 face offs and picked up 12 ground balls.  Hann was the main reason why MHC held Wingate to four goals, winning 83 percent of the face offs on the afternoon.

Cudmore held the attackman he was guarding to zero points in the victory at Wingate, as he helped hold the Bulldogs to their lowest offensive output of the season. Cudmore also had four caused turnovers and four ground balls. This is the third time this season that Cudmore has been named DSC Freshman of the Week.

Bulldogs sweep weekly DSC honors

Wingate University senior attach Greg Williams (Woodbridge, Va.) is this week’s Deep South Conference Offensive Player of the Week. Wingate senior defender Evan Schaller (Kirkville, N.Y.) is the Defensive Player of the Week while Danny Dlugozima (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) is the Freshman of the Week, league officials announced Monday.

Williams wins the award for the second week in a row. He had 10 goals and an assist to lead the Bulldogs to a 2-0 week. Williams started his week by racking up eight goals in Wingate’s 20-10 win over Queens. He scored the eight goals on eight shots. Williams had two goals and an assist in Wingate’s 7-6 win over number seven Limestone Sunday. He also collected six ground balls on the day.

Schaller helped lead the Bulldogs to a 2-0 week. He collected five ground balls to help the Bulldogs to a 20-10 win over Queens. Schaller followed that performance by holding Limestone All-American attack Brendan Storrier without a shot in Wingate’s 7-6 win over the seventh-ranked Saints. Schaller also collected four ground balls.

Dlugozima picked up a pair of wins in the nets for the Bulldogs. He had seven saves to go along with six ground balls in Wingate’s 20-10 win at Queens. He followed that performance by racking up 15 saves and allowing only six goals in Wingate’s 7-6 win over number seven Limestone Sunday. He also collected seven ground balls in that victory.

Wingate, Rollins and Catawba earn DSC honors

Wingate University senior Greg Williams (Woodbridge, Va.) has been named the Deep South Conference Offensive Player of the Week. Rollins sophomore goalie Zach Cole (Rumford, R.I.) is the Defensive Player of the Week while Catawba’s Braden Artem (Acton, Ontario, Canada) is the Freshman of the Week, league officials announced Monday.

Williams racked up nine goals and two assists in Wingate’s two games on the week, as the Bulldogs defeated Pfeiffer 17-8, then dropped a 15-9 decision to #4 Merrimack. Williams started his week with six goals and an assist in the victory over Pfeiffer. He scored the six goals on six shots while also collecting two ground balls. Williams followed that performance up with three goals and an assist Saturday against fourth-ranked Merrimack while collecting three ground balls. On the week, Williams scored his 11 goals on 12 shots.  

Cole piled up 42 saves as Rollins went 1-1 on the week, defeating Franklin Pierce while falling to Saint Michael’s. He had 25 saves against the Ravens to help the Tars explode into the lead in the final three minutes of action, and then notched an impressive 17 saves in three quarters against the Purple Knights. Cole had a 74 percent save percentage against FPU while grabbing four ground balls, and closed the week with a save percentage of 66 percent with two ground balls and a caused turnover against Saint Michael’s.

Artem scored four goals and added two assists as Catawba claimed a win at St. Andrews. He scored twice late in the first quarter as Catawba tied the game at 2-2 then added two more goals as the Catawba Indians took the lead for good at 4-3 with just over nine minutes left in the first half. Artem added a pair of assists in the third quarter as Catawba increased its lead to 10-4. He also picked up four ground balls. On the season, Artem shares the team lead with 14 goals and has added three assists.

Saint Leo and Wingate claim weekly DSC awards

Saint Leo University freshman midfielder Jake McGuinness (Barnstable, Mass.) is the Deep South Conference Defensive Player of the Week while teammate Joe Anderson (Bellmore, N.Y.) is the Freshman of the Week. Wingate University redshirt senior midfielder Mark Hodsdon (Hilton Head, S.C.) is the Offensive Player of the Week, league officials announced Monday.

The Lions went 3-0 on the week, on their way to a program-best 6-1 start. Saint Leo defeated Queens (N.C.) 10-9 on March 9. That was followed by a 12-8 conference victory over Catawba on March 12. The Lions concluded the week with a 26-2 victory over Franklin Pierce.

McGuinness helped anchor the defense for the Lions all week. He racked up seven ground balls in the victory over Queens, while collecting 16 for the week. McGuinness also notched an assist in the win over Franklin Pierce, while holding them to only two goals.

Anderson racked up four goals and three assists in the victory over Franklin Pierce. He also had six ground balls on the week. Anderson scored his four goals on seven shots in the 26-2 victory Sunday.

Hodsdon had seven goals and an assist to lead Wingate to a 20-4 victory over Lees-McRae Saturday afternoon. He scored the seven goals on 10 shots while also collecting a pair of groundballs on the day. The 2008 All-DSC selection leads the Bulldogs with 15 goals on the year.

Three different schools represented in Player of the Week honors

Three different schools had student-athletes earn Deep South Conference Player of the Week awards this week, DSC officials announced Monday evening. Student-athletes from Saint Leo (Fla.) University, Mars Hill College and Rollins (Fla.) College were recognized with DSC Player of the Week laurels Monday.

Saint Leo junior midfielder Kyle Marceau (Concord, N.H.) is this week’s Offensive Player of the Week. Mars Hill senior goalkeeper Nick Sigona (Auburn, N.Y.) is the Defensive Player of the Week for the third consecutive week. Rollins freshman attack Cooper Gilman (Winter Park, Fla.) is the league’s Freshman of the Week. Marceau and Gilman are honored for the first time in their respective careers.

Marceau helped the Lions to a 2-0 weekly record and a big Deep South Conference home victory over Wingate Tuesday. Saint Leo (3-1 overall) defeated Wingate 16-11 on Tuesday. The Lions topped Grand Canyon (Ariz.) University 17-8 on Thursday.

In the Wingate victory, Marceau had five goals. In the contest against Grand Canyon, he had two goals and four assists. Saint Leo hosts Catawba College Thursday (7 p.m.) in a huge DSC contest.

Sigona allowed only six goals in a big 17-6 DSC road victory over Catawba Saturday afternoon. Signoa helped hold Catawba to only one-of-five on extra-man opportunities. The MHC Lions visit regional foe Lees-McRae College Wednesday for a 3:30 p.m. encounter.

Gilman had a big game as Rollins dropped a heartbreaking 16-15 decision versus Queens University of Charlotte last week in Winter Park. Gilman had three goals and two assists in the contest.

A Winter Park native, Gilman shot 60 percent on Saturday. He found success on 80 percent of his shots on goal, helping the RC Tars stay in contention against the Royals. The Tars bounced back from a 7-3 halftime deficit to outscore Queens 12-9 and climb back to within one point of their opponent. Rollins hosts Catawba for a DSC showdown Tuesday at 2 p.m.

Mars Hill sweeps weekly DSC awards againWingate, N.C.----
For the second consecutive week, Mars Hill College wins all three Deep South Conference Player of the Week awards, league officials announced Monday. Mars Hill junior attack Danny Farmer (Calgary, Alberta, Canada) is this week’s Offensive Player of the Week. Senior goalkeeper Nick Sigona (Auburn, N.Y.) is the Defensive Player of the Week while freshman defender Chris Cudmore (Whitby, Ontario, Canada) was selected Freshman of the Week. The Lions went 2-0 on the week, including a victory over #10 Belmont Abbey.

Farmer had the game winner in overtime in Mars Hill’s 15-14 win over Seton Hill. He racked up eight goals and one assist against Seton Hill.  The 2008 all-conference selection had two goals and three assists as the Lions topped 10th-ranked Belmont Abbey.

Sigona had 14 Saves while allowing only six goals against Belmont Abbey for a 70% save percentage. The 2008 all-conference performer was a big reason why Belmont Abbey was only three-for-14 on its man-up opportunities. Sigona also collected eight ground balls. He racked up 15 saves, including one in overtime, in Mars Hill’s 15-14 win over Seton Hill.

In Mars Hill’s win over Belmont Abbey, Cudmore held his attacker without a point. He also recorded four ground balls and caused three turnovers. He was part of the man-down unit that killed 11 of 14 penalties. Cudmore collected one ground ball and caused two turnovers in the victory over Seton Hill.

Mars Hill sweeps weekly DSC Awards

The Mars Hill College Lions swept the weekly Deep South Conference Awards in the first week of voting, league officials announced Monday. Mars Hill junior attack Danny Farmer (Calgary, Alberta, Canada) is this week’s Offensive Player of the Week. Senior goalkeeper Nick Sigona (Auburn, N.Y.) is the Defensive Player of the Week, while freshman defender Chris Cudmore (Whitby, Ontario, Canada) was selected Freshman of the Week.

An All-DSC selection last year, Farmer led MHC to a 17-12 victory in the Lions’ season opener at Nick SigonaSt. Andrews Presbyterian College. He scored six goals on 12 shots with a .500 shot percentage and a .583 shot on goal percentage.

A 2008 All-DSC selection, Sigona recorded 13 saves with a .520 save percentage in the 17-12 victory. He was part of a man-down unit that posted a 94 percent penalty killing ratio.

Cudmore joined Sigona as a part of the man-down unit that posted a 94 percent penalty killing ratio. He added three ground balls and caused three turnovers in Mars Hill’s victory.
